This is the marriage register entry for Benjamin Butler and Nancy Jane Wolf from Richardson County, Nebraska, in 1864. I'm working on reading the last few lines of this document which indicate that the marriage took place "at my house in the City of..." and present were "Dan'l Wolf..." Any thoughts on the other witness?
We'll probably have a discussion of this in an upcoming issue of Casefile Clues. This marriage provides slight citation issues as the page numbers are worn away from some of the pages.

Could the surname be "Strichler" or "Strictler". The stroke on the "t" seems to start as the dot above the letter "i" like that in the word "matrimony" which would make my first guess (educated) the most likely.
ReplyDeleteI cannot even make a guess at the first name !!
I had thought possibly that the first name of the second person might be something starting with the letters "And" but that is a pure guess. Something starting with "Str" is very reasonable for the last name, but I'm still drawing a blank on it.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is Drays Wharf for the city, and [ ] Shrottie.
ReplyDeleteThe last line says "five others."
ReplyDeleteHis house in the city of Arago. Probate Judge was Charles F. Walther, 1860-68
ReplyDeleteI can see the reasoning for "five others" ( from wahig ) but it seems out of context. Also the 'i' in five is probably the tallest letter shown while all the other 'i's on the document are very small indeed.
ReplyDeleteI will leave this to more experienced handwriting experts than I !!
...at my house in the City of Arago.

Dan'l Wolf and Andy Hrcthe or Hrotti?
ReplyDeleteI've got the entire page for this entry and will try and get it posted. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will help with the name that I cannot really read.
